What is Insulin aspart?

Insulin aspart (brand names NovoLog in the US and NovoRapid in Europe) is a rapid-acting mealtime (bolus) human insulin analog approved by the FDA and EMA for type 1 and type 2 diabetes in adults and children.

It is a widely used prescription drug backed by randomized controlled trials and meta-analyses in humans; a faster-absorbed formulation (faster aspart, Fiasp) is also approved.

How does Insulin aspart work?

Substituting proline at position B28 with aspartic acid reduces hexamer formation, allowing quicker subcutaneous absorption than regular human insulin.

The result is a faster onset and shorter action that better covers the post-meal glucose rise.
